Out today in book stores, a unique Star Wars book by Jack Mitchell features the Star Wars saga like you’ve never seen before: As an epic poem. In the same vein as classic epic poems like The Odysseus and Beowulf, Mitchell has crafted an incredible work of poetry retelling the Star Wars story in verse.
Courtesy of Abrams Books, AIPT has a selection of pages from The Odyssey of Star Wars: An Epic Poem which can be purchased from Abrams Books. These excerpts feature Luke Skywalker’s ambition, the torture of Chewbacca on Cloud City, and the freezing of Han Solo in carbonite.
The book also features illustrations inspired by terracotta art of Greek antiquity which further lend a unique approach to Star Wars. And yet, as is known George Lucas was inspired by The Hero with a Thousand Faces which further lends credence to this work.
So what’s The Odyssey of Star Wars: An Epic Poem about?
Journey to a galaxy far, far away like never before—through lyrical verse and meter. Like the tales of Odysseus and Beowulf, the adventures of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia, Jyn Erso, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Darth Vader, and the Emperor are fraught with legendary battles, iconic heroes, fearsome warriors, sleek ships, and dangerous monsters. Beginning with Rogue One’s rebel heist on Scarif to secure the plans to the Death Star and continuing through the climax of Return of the Jedi, author Jack Mitchell uses the ancient literary form of epic poetry to put a new spin on the Star Wars saga.
