When I Consume You is a draining horror movie. Its ultra-realistic look provides a personal touch while its tale of grief and revenge will pull audiences into its world. The story follows Wilson and Daphne Shaw, two siblings who lean on each other for support. Daphne (Libby Ewing) seems to be getting her life back together when her past comes back to haunt her.
Ewing and and Evan Dumouchel (They Look Like People) are excellent as the brother and sister. The pair have a chemistry that comes through in every exchange. It is obvious that they care for and love each other. There is a lot of good to be found in When I Consume You, but everything is made better by the stellar performances.
Filmmaker Perry Blackshear is able to create an atmosphere using to strong character development and excellent camerawork. When I Consume You has a realistic look that looks like an old home movie. Angles are used that put anyone watching into the world of the characters. It is frightening and tense.
There is also a sadness that permeates throughout When I Consume You. It often seems like the twists are going to be too obvious or the writing too on the nose, but Blackshear’s has crafted a clever horror movie that deals with years long suffering. The supernatural elements seamlessly fit into a narrative that deals in real world issues.
The ending provides the outrageous showdown expected from horror movies while still packing an emotional punch. When I Consume You is a straightforward tale with a deeper meaning. It is about the things we are afraid to talk about, but have to live with.
