‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’ season 3 episode 4 review: A dangerous on ship race

The dreaded delta shift start causing trouble again on Star Trek: Lower Decks

The young ensigns of Star Trek: Lower Decks can’t seem to play nice with their peers. Last week, the gang developed a rivalry with a group from another ship to see who could perform their duties quicker and better. On the most recent episode, they compete with the dreaded delta shift for a luxurious prize.

As the show’s name implies, our heroes are the bottom of the food chain in Star Fleet so that also means they have the worst accommodations. When an opening for a desirable living quarter comes up, Mariner, Boimler, and Tendi devise a plan to better their odds of being selected. Unfortunately for them, members of the delta shift have the same idea and it’s a race to see who can enact their scheme first.

Because of being in the Star Trek Universe, it’s expected to watch an elaborate space adventure on exotic worlds. However, in this episode of Lower Decks, they prove that an exciting quest can happen on your own ship. It was a lot of fun to see different corners of the USS Cerritos and what kind of unexpected neat things there are to uncover.

Yet it also contains zany exploits. Whether it’s the trio tripping out from a NOS emitting swamp or getting caught in Shaxs and T’Ana’s roleplay that leads to foreplay, we receive examples of the signature humor.

What is really on display is the camaraderie of the folks on the lower decks. They are the underappreciated who take dangerous missions so sometimes what keeps you going is the person right next to you. Mariner, Boimler, and Tendi never give up on each other and are always there to lend a hand. They even have quality time with delta shift as they gossip about their commanding officers and realize they all need to stick together. The series has a lot of jokes, but has as much heart.

Meanwhile, Rutherford and the rest of the engineers are forced to take some R & R since they have been stressed out while being overworked. It’s entertaining to see the lengths they go to make it seem as if they are following orders and to make everyone happy. But everyone has their own way of relaxing and they do it how you would expect nerdy engineers would.

“Room for Growth” shows how close-knit the lower deck community is through a wacky adventure throughout the Cerritos.
