‘Confessions of a Hitman’ (2022): True story of 28 murders in 25 years

Just another guy.

Confessions of a Hitman tells the incredible true story Gerald Gallant. Played by director Luc Picard, Gallant worked with biker gangs in Quebec between 1978-2003. During the twenty five year period he committed twenty-eight murders. Obviously a person who is able to kill that many people (he attempted to get rid of another twelve) is one of the most cunning and sophisticated criminals of all time. Instead, Gallant was an average guy who lived a normal middle class life with his religious wife. So, how did he get away with so much?

The script wisely keeps things as muted as its subject. Due to the nature of the story, there are plenty of opportunities to sensationalize things. For example, along with being a prolife assassin, Gallant had a wife at a home and a longtime girlfriend. Confessions of a Hitman does not play up any of the more salacious details. Some may even think the plot moves too slowly.

In place of having over the top kills and a scintillating cat and mouse between Gallant and the people (both the police and criminals are after him) who are trying to find him, the film is more of a character study. Obviously, there are some elements of how was he was able to remain undetected for so long, but these moments feed into the bigger picture. This is less about a hitman evading capture for a quarter of a century and more about how a very normal person became one of the most prolific killers in Canadian history.

'Confessions of a Hitman' (2022): True story of 28 murders in 25 years

Without brutal kills and unbridled violence, this puts a premium on Picard’s performance. It is a grounded one whose entire strength is in how unremarkable it is. He does not bring any personality and does not do anything to stand out. The circumstances around Gallant are interesting, but the man himself can be very dull. This is all intentional as it showcases how he was able to fly under the radar for so long, but it also makes Confessions of a Hitman a difficult if interesting watch.

Confessions of a Hitman comes to VOD/Digital December 2
