Silk is a growing fan-favorite character who seems to have a new series relaunch every year. 2023 is apparently no exception, as Silk #1 debuts from Emily Kim and Ig Guara this week. Kim isn’t new to Silk either, as she kicked off Silk #1 a little over a year ago, and now she’s back with a tantalizing first issue.
I say tantalizing because much of Silk #1 is a misdirect. I’ll say no more to avoid spoilers, but expect some big revelations by the end of the issue that adds to the satisfying experience.
Most of the first issue is set in Hollywoodland in the early days of America, possibly in the 1920s. Silk is dressed up like a film noir detective and doing some investigating. Having a new location and setting kick things off is a bit of a shock, but rest assured, it all makes sense by the end.
Ig Guara’s art, along with colors by Ian Herring, gives the story a slightly sepia, flashback feel. Layouts tend to be simple and with only a few panels per page, but you’d be darned not to linger on every single panel, thanks to the excellent texture and depth of every one, including multiple showstopper moments. It’s also cool to see Silk in a 1920s-style costume with a tiny hat. When things get weird, and Silk is transported to different locations, the art team makes you feel the confusion along with Silk. It’s top-notch artwork here.
There’s also an exciting action sequence. Ever wanted to see Silk fight a monster with glowing yellow eyes? Again, the details in the monster’s fur and the choreography of every punch and kick are well done.
Regarding the story, Kim has an intriguing premise at work here. It’s got a Lost sort of feel as we try to figure out what is going on, and it’s a great concept that allows the creative team to explore different eras in American history. Captions put us in Silk’s shoes as she ponders what is happening and how she knows a mysterious woman.
Outside of the cool premise and twist at the end, this issue does feel a little light on plot progression. That said, it’s largely a mystery box with a big reveal, and that’s perfectly adequate as a starting issue.
Silk #1 is an excellent example of outside-the-box storytelling paired with superhero antics working very well. Pick this up for the big mystery, but stay for the compelling setup as Silk travels across iconic eras in American history.
