‘Scream Therapy’ review: Feminist horror comedy leans into message

The performances are the best and worst part.

Scream Therapy is a feminist horror comedy that looks at identity, self-worth, and friendship. After Avery (Harley Browyn) breaks ups with her boyfriend of seven years, she and her friends head out to the desert for some partying and restorative scream therapy. They cross paths with some demon-worshipping incels who need a human sacrifice. When things fall part, the ladies must complete an impossible task before the sun rises.

There are plenty of scary movies sent in the desert, and this one looks like it is going to be another, just with a primarily female cast. That is a big part of Scream Therapy, but there are more layers. Comedy plays a big role and there is a very strong message of resilience and unity built into the narrative.

The performances are the best and worst part of Scream Therapy. While some will find the over the top antics grating, there is no doubting how strong their chemistry is. The group have a powerful bond that is seen in everything they go through. Many movies often set women against each other, but that is never the case here. This is seen in the humor which is less about making fun of each other and more about the situation.

It is also in the women that the heart of the film rests. The horror aspect is there to push the plot forward, but does little else. The stakes are high in theory, but never really come across. There is little in the way of gore and the deaths do not leave much impact. These are not necessarily bad things since it allows for there to be more of a focus on the message.
