[Fantasia ’23] ‘Restore Point’ review: Sci-fi cop thriller looks at life after death

The first sci-fi movie from the Czech Republic in forty years.

Restore Point is a crime thriller with science fiction leanings. In 2041 Europe, a technology exists that can bring people back to life. Detective Emma Trochinowska (Andrea Mohylova) is tasked to solve a grisly double murder. Nothing is as it seems as each answer seems to lead to more questions.

A tense action sequence opens the film and sets the tone for what is to come. While sci-fi elements are present, it is more about Emma. She is quickly established as a lone wolf who will do what she feels is necessary. There are a number of familiar tropes in Restore Point, but they are not the ones expected. Technology is a huge part of the story, but it is the police aspects that propel the plot forward. Dialogue, settings, and conspiracies are a part of the tale and are reminiscent more of cop dramas than science-fiction. This makes sense as this is the first sci-fi movie to come out of the Czech Republic in four decades.

The reliance on these proven genre conventions give the atmosphere and characters added importance. Text in the beginning clues audiences in that life may be fragile, but there is now a workaround for death. The minimalist set design adds to the feeling that it is a world where function is more important than form. Overheard shots showcase a stark world with a little to admire aside from an emotionless symmetry.

The sci-fi elements are not completely ignored, however. Along with a way to bring people back to life, there are self-driving cars, computerized newspapers, and life-like holograms. Since Restore Point is not set too far in the future, its world is simultaneously fantastic and realistic. Most of what is seen has already been introduced in real life and little is out of the question.

[Fantasia '23] 'Restore Point' review: Sci-fi cop thriller looks at life after death

Restore Point is a very human story. Grief and love are important themes and the idea that the world is becoming too reliant on technological advancements is a point of contention. It can be too formulaic at times, but strong performances and an exciting story keep audiences interested.
