[SXSW ’24] ‘Clemente’ review: Documentary examines an amazing athlete and person

One of the most important players in MLB history.

Clemente is a look at one of Major League Baseball’s most important players. Roberto Clemente became the sport’s first Puerto Rican superstar while playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Screening at South by Southwest, the documentary looks at the man and the athlete whose influence is still felt today.

There are plenty of interviews that help flesh out Clemente. Since he played on a small market team, he tends to be overlooked by all but the biggest MLB fans. The film helps explain why he is respected in America and revered in his home country. It is an insightful watch that goes beyond the endless (and very deserved) platitudes.

Clemente discusses many of its subjects substantial on field accomplishments. From two World Series championships to winning the MVP of the Fall Classic, Clemente had an enviable career.  The archival footage also does a great job of showing what an outstanding player he was.

But it is his work as a person that is the real standout. It had been less than a decade since Jackie Robinson had broken the color barrier and Clemente had to deal with many prejudices. The press mocked the way he spoke and came up with derogatory nicknames. In some states he was denied service. Despite the constant attacks, he continued to hold his head high.

He demanded fair treatment for the other Black players on the team while helping the underprivileged in the Pittsburgh community. Even his death – he died in a plane crash while transporting supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua – encompasses what makes him such an important figure. He was an amazing baseball player, but an even better person.

SXSW takes place March 8 – March 16. The full lineup can be found HERE
