‘Reginald the Vampire’ season 2 episode 2 review: The doomsday clock for all vampires starts ticking

Reginald the vampire looks to make some positive changes in his community.

Last week, Reginald the Vampire returned for its sophomore season. As our titular character attempts to transition back to his regular life, he is haunted by a mysterious figure in his dreams. In “30 Days,” that figure reveals himself to the greater vampire population, and he doesn’t have good intentions.

The episode does a good job of further distinguishing our hero to the rest of his kind. Now that his maker has ascended to a position of power, the pair look to enact positive change amongst the vampires demonstrating that though others might consider them monsters, they don’t have to act like it. We also witness the pushback the community at large gives best personified by forever underlings Lebron and Penelope. Sean Yves Lessard and Georgia Waters bring a delightfully humorous and petty energy setting up roadblocks and resistance to their new leaders in every possible way.

The biggest reveal during the bureaucracy is the grandiose entrance of Reginald the Vampire’s big bad this season, Bolestro. Garfield Wilson has a magnetic presence after surprising everyone, and lays down his intentions for vampires and his reasoning behind it. What a spectacle of an introduction to his enemies (even though we already met him in the season two premiere). In addition, the ease at which he incapacitates Maurice shows how powerful he is.

Meanwhile, Claire’s background becomes more enigmatic. We receive answers about her father. It expands the mythology and adds to the supernatural aspects. Plus, it’s nice that Claire has a complete family now. But there is still an intriguing aura of mystery surrounding her character that even her dad cannot explain. There are even clever subtle details that further reiterate her uniqueness.

There are several couple to keep track of on Reginald the Vampire, but the least developed is between Mike, Maurice’s old partner, and Todd, the manager at the Slushy Shack. During the season one finale, it seemed they were randomly forced together, and it shows this season. They don’t have the same chemistry as other romantic pairings such as Reginald and Sarah or Ashley and Nikki. Plus, many of their interactions are rehashes of the rules and responsibilities of becoming a vampire. However, they are slowly but surely winning you over, particularly, Aren Bucholz’s lovable meathead schtick

Though we’ve seen him before, “30 Days” marks the real introduction of the season’s antagonist in dramatic fashion worthy of the main adversary.

New episodes of Reginald the Vampire air Wednesdays on Syfy.

Garfield Wilson has a magnetic and commanding presence as his Bolestro is introduced as enemy to the vampires.
The mystery surrounding Claire keeps her one of the more intriguing characters.
Some of Mike and Todd's interactions are rehashes of the rules and responsibilities of a vampire we learned last season.
