Channel Surfing: Awesome TV picks for the week of 06/03/2024

Our first Channel Surfing TV picks of June.

As we start the month of June, we have summer on our mind. Our latest Channel Surfing TV picks can help you beat the heat. Visit Star Wars’ High Republic era in The Acolyte. See if a young animal/human hybrid boy can save the world in the final season of Sweet Tooth. Then, writer, director, and comedian Julio Torres has a brand-new series with Fantasmas

Tipping the Balance

Though Star Wars has a nearly 50 year history, its High Republic era is a more recent development. The period takes place hundreds of years before the Skywalker Saga during the golden age of both the Galactic Republic and Jedi Order.

The Acolyte is a new series taking place in this time. The peace is disturbed when Jedi are hunted by a dangerous assassin. One Jedi Master investigates the murders and finds he has a personal link with the killer. The longer he pursues, the more clues are revealed regarding a sinister force.

Stream the two-episode series premiere of The Acolyte beginning Tuesday, June 4, on Disney+.

The Key to the Cure

In the post-apocalyptic world of Sweet Tooth, a disease known as the Sick nearly kills the entire human population. During the pandemic, babies begin to be born possessing animal body parts. Because of the timing, these hybrids are blamed and hunted down. Gus, a deer hybrid, sets out on a perilous trek to find his mother.

In season three, Gus’s search leads him up to Alaska. Accompanied by his friends Jepperd, Becky, and Wendy, they find refuge up north. But their safety is only temporary as the warlord Helen Zhang is on their tail. Gus holds the key to ending the Sick within him but can a cure be made before Zhang strikes?

The entire final season of Sweet Tooth releases Thursday, June 6, on Netflix.

A New Comedy Experience

Julio Torres is a comedic talent having written for Saturday Night Live and starred in and co-created the under appreciated Los Espookys. He is back on TV with a new series premiering this week.

Fantasmas follows a man named Julio (Torres), who perceives the world around us differently. One day, he loses a gold oyster earring and goes out to retrieve it. During his journey, he crosses paths with colorful and offbeat characters in an alternate version of New York City. The six-episode season will have numerous guest stars including Steve Buscemi, Paul Dano, Emma Stone, and more.

Fantasmas debuts Friday, June 7, on HBO.
