‘Into The Unbeing Part One’ #2 ramps up the horror and unease

A fantastic second issue that every horror fan should check out.

The eerie horror series Into The Unbeing Part One returns this week with its second issue. The first issue introduced a team of scientists investigating a strange ecological new landform. The year is 2034, and the world has seen its fair share of ecological failure, but this landform clearly isn’t dirt and sand but some kind of giant. The first issue ended with the crew entering the mouth of a cave to find a missing team member, but what they find is anything but normal.

If you liked the first issue, you’ll likely love the second issue. Into the Unbeing Part One #2 doesn’t waste much time before diving three of the remaining team members into the mouth of the giant. They immediately find what seems like tissue and teeth but are skeptical. Writer Zac Thompson knows the reader knows what’s going on, but it’s still interesting to hear these scientists try to explain how a cave could be fleshy and springy.

There’s a creep factor turned all the way up to eleven in this issue, as the characters are essentially entering a haunted house made of flesh. As they progress through the interior of this giant, they encounter weird tunnels, strange hairy bits, and pretty much anything you might imagine you’d find if you got shrunk down and entered a body. It’s a bit gross, unnerving, and really good body horror on a new scale.

'Into The Unbeing Part One' #2 review

Love how Sherman uses the darkness on this page.

On top of that, the story progresses to new details nicely while the team gets deeper into what feels like their inevitable deaths. Thompson weaves in some political elements that feel right at home with today’s point of view on corporations, and there’s even a bit of history tucked into the giant, as well as a diary page that will have the hairs on your neck stand up. All told, this is an excellent second issue that’ll have you on the edge of your seat.

Hayden Sherman utilizes every inch of the pages with long panels to convey the darkness around our characters as they enter a cavity. Another full-page splash has a Chutes and Ladders feel as the characters crawl through tunnels that loop back on themselves. Sherman leans into the darkness quite a bit, which enhances the mystery and horror of what these characters are encountering.

Letters by Jim Campbell are also excellent, with a handwritten style and captions that add a personal touch. Word balloons are well placed with sharp, long tails where needed to help draw your eye to the characters.

Is this comic perfect? Honestly, close to it. Some of the art can look a little washed out due to the colors. The colors work great in most cases, but there’s something missing at times that can make things look muddy.

Into the Unbeing Part One #2 is the best second issue of any comic I’ve read all year. It ramps up the horror, the mystery, and unease perfectly. Into The Unbeing Part One fills you with dread, mixing sci-fi, body horror, and an electrical shock of fear. This is a must-read for all horror fans. Trust me, I’m still thinking about it!
