Sometimes you just need a good old fashioned horror movie. Faces is a short film screening at the Fantasia Film Festival that scratches that itch. In town for the weekend, Judy is invited to a college party. Knowing it will be a good time, she decides to attend. An encounter with a deadly entity leads to violent consequences, however.
The plot seems like it is going to be just another slasher. A group of young people are headed to a party, the main character seems reluctant before agreeing to go, and there is even a mean girl and a sex scene with a decidedly unhappy ending. Faces is familiar to even those who are not horror fans.
There is more than just horror tropes to the film, though. It is a stylish watch that uses lighting and the underlying theme of identity to deliver its most powerful moments. Faces may have the quick cuts and jump scares that are found in the genre, but it is the scenes when the evil is trying to find it itself that really stand out. This is a short that you will want to see more of.
The Fantasia International Film Festival takes places from July 18 – August 4. Check out the latest news HERE
