‘Booger’ review: Cat scratch fever

Boogie down.

Cats are an important part of horror. From the old superstition of a black cat crossing your path being bad luck to stories of feline’s sucking the breath from babies, there are plenty of dark tales surrounding them. Booger is a comedy horror that follows one woman’s search for her pet cat. Along the way she deals with grief, work, and lots of hairballs.

“Gross” may be the best way to describe Booger. Writer-director Mary Dauterman constantly uses visuals that will take audiences aback. The body horror label used in the synopsis may be a stretch, but shots of wet stringy hair and close ups of people eating food,  are some straight up disgusting. Nothing is ever overdone and all of these moments will garner a reaction.

At first, the film seems like it is just another horror movie. There are hints that Anna (Grace Glowicki) is having trouble processing the death of her friend Izzy (Sofia Dobrushin), but once her cat Booger bites her, it seems to be clear what direction this is headed. Especially as the wound festers and Anna’s eating habits change.

A twist towards the end reveals there is much more to Booger, however. Subtle signs that have been sprinkled throughout begin to come together. It is still a horror movie, but there is another level to it. Regrettably, the ending does not provide a satisfying payoff. Still, it is an enjoyable watch.

Booger opens in theaters and VOD September 13.
