The Veil is a great watch for the Halloween season. The plot takes a classic ghost story and adds elements of horror and science fiction to make something different. A retired priest named Douglas (Seasn O’Bryan, Babylon) is awakened by knocking at his farmhouse door. He meets a young Amish woman (Rebekah Kennedy, Two Witches) who has decided to leave the community she has known her entire life.
The Veil mainly centers around its two main characters and O’Bryan and Kennedy set the pace for the film. Both do an excellent job of driving home the mystery of The Veil. The initial kind nature of Douglas turns to one of desperation as he tries to atone for perceived sins of the past. It is a case of two emotional extremes and O’Bryan delivers a believable performance. Kennedy is able to keep up in a role that requires various ring states of panic. There is a vulnerability that is engaging. Together, the two have the type of chemistry that is very important in a patiently paced film like The Veil.
Douglas and Hannah are arguably the most memorable part, but writer-director Cameron Beyl creates a moody atmosphere around them. The Veil alternates between grounded interiors and magnificently lit exteriors. The story is a haunting one powered by emotion and filled with terrifying visuals and mind bending twists. Those looking to build their 31 Nights of Halloween list should make sure to add this movie.
The Veil comes to VOD October 4.
