‘Minor Arcana’ #3 review: Magic meets melancholy

‘Minor Arcana’ #3 gives Theresa some closure.

Magic and small-town depression combine in Minor Arcana, a captivating new series written and drawn by Jeff Lemire. The third issue arrives in comic shops this week after Theresa gets back on the wagon, which puts her in an even darker place. She refuses to believe her mother’s tarot readings at her shop are real, but when she enters a magical hotel and talks to a dead guy, how do you deny that? It’s a question put to the test in issue #3 when Theresa comes face to face with her high school lover.

Minor Arcana #3 feels like it could be the end of the series, in a good way. The issue opens with a full catch-up on Theresa’s relationship with Melissa, her high school ex. We then cut to where we left off, with Theresa knocking on her ex’s door, only to be met by her ex’s husband.

Once again, Lemire does a fantastic job humanizing the characters and writing natural dialogue. From Theresa’s outrageous anger at their front door to the convo she has with the husband in his police car everything feels real and authentic. This leads to a revelation thanks to the kindness of a diner waitress, which in turn leads to a touching moment for Theresa. For a woman so hurt and angry, it’s nice to see her get a win in this issue.

So far, Theresa has been in a crumby mood and hates her town, but by the end of the issue, Lemire makes a case for Theresa to change her mind. Ultimately, it comes a little quickly to my tastes, but the fact that she has magic abilities shows she belongs in her hometown.

As mentioned before, the final page feels like it could be the end of the series. Theresa is left happier and more at ease, knowing she’s in the right place. There doesn’t appear to be any conflict left to resolve, and that makes for a cliffhanger that leaves you wanting. Yes, her mom is still sick, and she doesn’t have control of her power just yet, but a lot of her rage seems to dissipate. I guess we’ll see where this goes from here.

In Minor Arcana #3, Jeff Lemire crafts a powerful, introspective story that balances small-town melancholy with a touch of the supernatural. Theresa’s journey toward acceptance—both of her hometown and herself—has been poignant and relatable, and by the issue’s end, readers are left with a rare blend of closure and curiosity. Whether this issue marks a turning point or a satisfying pause, it’s clear Lemire knows how to keep readers emotionally invested.
