Judging by the Cover – 03/12/25 new releases

Colin shares his favorite covers from this week’s new comics.

There is a veritable cornucopia of new comics hitting stands each week. While readers often know exactly what it is they’re most interested in (those in the know have got their pull-list sitting in their comic shop’s ever-reliable hands), there is something to be said about going against that old truism and Judging a Book by Its Cover.

Some truly astounding cover art hits each and every week, and these are the ones that caught Colin’s eye the week of March 12th, 2025.

Action Comics #1084

Variant by Jae Lee

Judging by the Cover – 03/12/25 new releases

With the Superman movie trailer out and a new Krypto: Last Dog of Krypton series announced, we’ve entered into a new Krypto golden era. Perfect timing, then, for this joyous Jae Lee cover in which that rascally super-fur has. . . destroyed an entire city, likely killing thousands.

Lee throws in a lot of loving detail to the Fortress of Solitude, from the free-flying Kandorians to the presumably-shielded hunks Kryptonite (in various colors). Even with the tragic massacre of most of the surviving Kryptonians, it’s a delightful cover.

DC vs Vampires: World War V #7

Variant by Santa Fung

Judging by the Cover – 03/12/25 new releases

I’ve included a lot of cool skull art in this column — and this isn’t even my first skull castle since I took over this column. And that isn’t even the draw of this cover (though it helps): Fung’s powerful, gory, and potentially horrifying take on Wonder Woman is absolutely killer.

Hullhunters #4

Cover by Jonas Scharf.

Judging by the Cover – 03/12/25 new releases

Bucky and a Burny Bone Boy in a big ol’ tank, fighting fascists. There is absolutely nothing to dislike about that concept. Sharf fills the image with so much kinetic, bombastic energy: Nazis flying everywhere, Hellfire tank treads spinning out. It’s positively thrilling.

Iron Man #6

Variant by Ian Bertram

Judging by the Cover – 03/12/25 new releases

There’s something incredibly punk about this Bertram Iron Man cover, an indie-comics cool inherent in the scratchy lines and contrasting colors. The new Iron Man design — which looks like it comes from a medieval fantasy — supports that massive, ridiculous sword of his. Here, Bertram adds a little Masters of the Universe energy crackle, a little Akira in the floating stones.

The Moon is Following Us #7

Cover by Riley Rossmo

Judging by the Cover – 03/12/25 new releases

The Moon is Following Us has been a non-stop barrage of strange dream critters and fantasy fun. Series artist Riley Rossmo gies a panapoly of those critters in this cover, which accentuates just how fun (if grim) the series is. I want to know all about these guys, quite frankly.

Napalm Lullaby #9

Variant by Carla Wyzgala

Judging by the Cover – 03/12/25 new releases

Artist Carla Wyzgala has a very particular aesthetic of ‘macabre fashion portraits’, crafting high-fashion models with a lot of pinks, blacks, and skulls. That aesthetic seems like a perfect match for this character spotlight cover for Napalm Lullaby. I’ve been missing out on this series despite all the hype, so I have no idea who this woman is. I assume she’s very cool, because Wyzgala drew her very, very cool.

Spawn #362

Variant by Jeff Monk

Judging by the Cover – 03/12/25 new releases

What a simple, gruesome cover from Jeff Monk, capturing the iconic Spawn mask and the grim, monstrous tone of the series. This feels celebratory of the entire franchise, boiling it down to one simple, splattered image. The illustration board watermarks being included is a nice touch, making it feel as if the reader will be handling an artifact of the creation rather than just a reproduction.

From the World of Minor Threats: Welcome to Twilight #1

Variant by Michael Allred

Judging by the Cover – 03/12/25 new releases

Few artists in comics feel as dynamically poppy as Michael Allred, who is a truly indispensable talent in the industry. Everything he draws feels somehow crafted from the very fabric of comics — there’s a great deal of illustration history wrapped up in this craftsmanship. That Allred is also incredibly subversive in his tone makes images like this feel loaded with meaning, even if it’s just a simple scene of a signing table.
