Batman begins again: DC reveals ‘Batman’ #1 covers and polybag program

Batman kicks off a bold new era this September as Matt Fraction and Jorge Jiménez reinvent the Dark Knight with fresh stories, a new look, and a dynamic creative vision.

DC is gearing up for a major new era in Gotham as Batman relaunches with a brand-new #1 issue on September 3, 2025. This marks just the fourth time the long-running series has been renumbered in its 85-year history. The fresh creative team includes Eisner Award-winning writer Matt Fraction (Hawkeye, Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen) and fan-favorite artist Jorge Jiménez (Batman), joined by colorist Tomeu Morey and letterer Clayton Cowles.

This new run kicks off with bold updates: a redesigned blue-and-gray Batsuit, a sleek new Batmobile, and a mix of brand-new and iconic characters, all grounded in a celebration of what makes Batman timeless.

“For me, Batman was the gateway to comics,” said Fraction. “This series is our chance to celebrate everything that makes the character great—from new characters to classic villains, from iconic vehicles to updated suits.”

Jiménez, thrilled to lead the charge as the series artist, added: “This is a dream project. I’ve poured everything into shaping a new visual language for Batman—bringing back the blue suit in a way that feels iconic but new, and giving Gotham a slight pop art flair while maintaining its gritty edge.”

Fraction summed it up best: “Batman endures because he can be so many things to so many people. We want this run to reflect that.”

Cover Gallery Showcases Top Talent

Issue #1 will feature a standard cover by Jiménez ($4.99), a foil variant also by Jiménez ($7.99), and an impressive slate of cardstock variants ($5.99 each) by some of the biggest names in comics—Jim Lee, Marc Silvestri, J. Scott Campbell, Frank Quitely, Gabriele Dell’Otto, and more. Incentive variants from Andy Kubert (1:25) and David Aja (1:50) are also on the way.

There’s even a premium wraparound “DC Showcase” variant by Stanley “Artgerm” Lau, priced at $24.99.

Collectors can also pick up a Giant-Size Special Edition of Batman #1 in an oversized 11″ x 17″ format. It’ll be available in standard cardstock ($14.99) and foil variant ($19.99) editions, both featuring cover art by Jiménez.

Blind Bag Collectibles Add Mystery to the Mix

Adding to the excitement, DC is releasing a Batman #1: “Blind as a Bat” polybag edition for $9.99. Inside, fans will find one randomly selected foil variant cover from a mystery lineup of top-tier artists like Artgerm, Jorge Jiménez, Frank Quitely, Julian Totino Tedesco, Jim Lee, and others.

A Fresh Storytelling Approach

Fraction and Jiménez plan to kick things off with a series of connected but standalone tales, each issue delivering its own adventure, tone, and twist, while building toward a larger vision. Expect variety, surprises, and a wide lens on Gotham.

Batman #1 hits shelves and digital platforms on September 3, 2025.
