At New York Comic Con’s Spider-Man and his Venomous Friends panel, Marvel pulled back the curtain on Death Spiral, a major crossover event launching this February. Spinning directly out of Amazing Spider-Man, Venom, and Eddie Brock: Carnage, the saga begins in the one-shot Amazing Spider-Man/Venom: Death Spiral #1 before weaving through Amazing Spider-Man and Venom issues through April.
The event teams up three of Marvel’s top symbiote writers—Joe Kelly (Amazing Spider-Man), Al Ewing (Venom), and Charles Soule (Eddie Brock: Carnage)—with artists Ed McGuinness, Carlos Gómez, and *Jesús Saíz. Together, they’ll pit Spider-Man, Venom, Carnage, and Mary Jane Watson (now bonded with Venom) against Torment, a terrifying new villain described as a super-powered serial killer who directly targets Peter Parker and everyone tied to him. “Spider-Man, Venom, Carnage, Mary Jane—they’re essentially a weird family unit, interconnected with gigantic amounts of history together,” Soule explained. “There’s an engine there, there’s a lot of emotional energy to smash together, break apart.” Joe Kelly added simply: “And then we needed a serial killer.”
The opening one-shot brings readers up to speed before plunging into the storyline across Amazing Spider-Man #23–27 and Venom #255–257. Executive Editor Nick Lowe teased, “One of the wildest times in Spider and Symbiote history revs into high gear with this killer crossover! Not only will readers see Peter Parker learn that Mary Jane is bonded with Venom, but also discover Eddie Brock has paired with Carnage. They’ll all be even more horrified when they face a scarier villain—Torment! No one is safe.”
