Grab your fishnets and dust off your time warp moves as the cult classic is back. Fans of Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Show are about to experience a brand-new chapter in the saga of Janet Weiss and Brad Majors with Bride of Rocky Horror, a 95-page full-color graphic novel set seven years after the events of the original story. Published by Bit Bot Media and currently live on Kickstarter, the project continues the legacy of camp, rebellion, and unapologetic queerness that made Rocky Horror a pop culture phenomenon.
Written by Magdalene Visaggio (Eternity Girl), illustrated by Noemi Vettori (X-Men Unlimited), and featuring colors by Josh Rodriguez and letters by Jeremiah Lambert, Bride of Rocky Horror revisits Janet as she dives into a new life of decadence and danger. But when she receives an invitation that reunites her with Brad — and introduces the mysterious Bridget Von Frankenstein — the madness begins anew.
That journey toward more Rocky Horror magic begins, of course, with a cover from Soo Lee. Here, the Carmilla artist’s work radiates the musical’s trademark mix of glamour, danger, and seductive chaos. Lee, a longtime fan of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, lends her distinctive flair to the project with a cover that feels both reverent and electric — a love letter to the cult classic’s fearless aesthetic.
Recently, I spoke with Lee about her creative process, her connection to Rocky Horror, and how she channeled its vibrant, transgressive energy into her cover. (Plus, a set of four interlocking prints that capture the story’s decadent journey.)
AIPT: Rocky Horror has such a unique visual identity. How did you approach creating the cover that honors the original while still putting your own spin on it?
Soo Lee: They already had a vision for what the cover would be and wanted my spin on it. It was an interesting process where it’s like taking a tour of the characters and the story in one illustration!
AIPT: You’ve said it’s an honor to return to this “wild world.” What was the most exciting part of reimagining these beloved characters for a new chapter?
SL: I’ve been such a big Rocky Horror fan since I was a kid. To be able to do a spin-off is like adding my hat into the fandom.
AIPT: Covers often serve as the first invitation into a story. What mood or themes were most important for you to capture on your Bride of Rocky Horror cover?
SL: We wanted it to be a visually inviting cover with the pops of bright colors. It has action, and I think enough spice to at least get people to do a double take!
AIPT: This project brings together an all-star creative team. How did knowing the book had Magdalene Visaggio and Noemi Vettori behind it influence your approach to the artwork?
SL: I actually didn’t know who was in the book. Drawing covers is sometimes just diving into a world, and you’re in your own universe to get the “introduction” just right.
AIPT: Rocky Horror is synonymous with chaos, passion, and rebellion. How did you channel those qualities visually into your designs?
SL: The artist who visualized the idea of the cover first really put a lot of story into the cover, and I wanted to make sure it translated well in my version
AIPT: The Kickstarter will include your four interconnecting prints. Can you tease what fans might expect from those pieces, and how they’ll fit together as a set?
SL: It’s like following the journey of what the characters might be up to.
AIPT: This is a continuation of a cult classic that means so much to the queer community. How did that legacy shape your mindset as you created the cover?
SL: The characters are so iconic, so I wanted to make sure the attitude and personalities shone through in it.
AIPT: Fun one: If you could the “Time Warp” to any decade for artistic inspiration, which era would you pick—and what would a Soo Lee cover from that time look like?
SL: Maybe the ’70s! It would probably be very vibrant and lots of pin-ups!
The Bride of Rocky Horror is now live on Kickstarter with a variety of tiers. The campaign runs through Thursday, November 20.
