Corey Feldman vs. the World: Chronicle of a victim and a villain

If it looks like a cult…

Corey Feldman vs. the World examines one of the most controversial child stars of the 1980s. This unauthorized documentary is not a look back on Feldman’s storied career, however. It is a look at how he has tried to stay relevant. The film follows the actor as he attempts to mount a tour with his music group, The Angels.

Director Marcie Hume was granted a shocking amount of access and takes her work in a different direction than similar films. Instead of postulating a theory or telling the audience what Corey Feldman vs. the World is going to be about, the camera simply follows Feldman around. Hume does not have a set agenda. Instead, she lets Feldman take control of everything through his words and actions.

Corey Feldman vs. the World is a wild ride. Feldman comes off as a controlling force of nature. Living in a mansion with his bikini-clad band, it is obvious that he is not used to being contradicted. Multiple times, he has a breakdown when things do not go his way. This can be something as simple as music not sounding right to him to more serious matters like not being able to fulfill tour commitments. His response always seems to be the same; fits of rage followed by going to his wife for consolation.

As the tour continues, things become more serious. It comes to light that the band have signed a contract that takes away many of their rights. One of the most revealing moments in Corey Feldman vs. the World is witnessing the lead singer berate the band for going alone to get something to eat. It is also in this segment that it is revealed that they have been denied access to bathe and have not gotten paid. There are also a few scenes that showcase Feldman’s predatory tendencies.

Corey Feldman vs. the World does not try to paint its subject in any type of light. There is obviously a dark side to some what he does. He takes advantage of his fame to lure women and fans into his world. More sickening it when he tries to use the Me Too movement for his financial gain. But it is hard not to watch and not see a person who is also a victim of his own success. It does raise the question of what kind of person he would be if anyone had ever told him no.

Corey Felman vs. the World comes to the Alamo Drafthouse March 6
