Welcome, X-Fans, to another uncanny edition of X-Men Monday at AIPT!
Following the conclusion of Deadpool/Wolverine, the merc with a mouth has ditched Logan and held on to writer Benjamin Percy for the X-Men: Shadows of Tomorrow series, Wade Wilson: Deadpool. Unfortunately for our unhinged protagonist, the world around him has never been more serious, which lines up well with the personal crisis he seems to be going through. (But don’t worry, Deadpool still has time to hide inside a cow and smash a steaming-hot pot of coffee into his face — and that’s only in the first half of Wade Wilson: Deadpool #1!)
With three issues of Wade Wilson: Deadpool already available, there’s no better time to check in with Ben to learn how this series came to be, his views on Wade, and what comes next. Let’s see what he has to say.

AIPT: Welcome back to X-Men Monday, Ben!
Benjamin Percy: Thanks for having me back!
AIPT: We’re three issues into your Wade Wilson: Deadpool series, but I’d like to go back a bit to learn how you decided to follow Deadpool/Wolverine with just Deadpool. What can you share about how this series came about?
Ben: I’ve had some experience writing the merc with a mouth. You already mentioned the 10-issue (graphic novel) Deadpool/Wolverine, but Wade also had a solid showing in my X-Force run. If you’re familiar with my work, you know that I have a dark and mayhemic sensibility. Deadpool satisfies those impulses, but he forces me to stretch my comedic muscles as well. That’s a fun and welcome challenge. I’m not as naturally funny as a writers like Gerry Duggan, Gail Simone, or Joe Kelly, but that’s okay — I think it gives me my own unique take on the character.

I chatted about this very thing with my editor Mark Basso when he reached out about the possibility of an ongoing. We decided to call this Wade Wilson: Deadpool, because we wanted to emphasize the man as much as the merc. Really dig our thumb into his wounded humanity. It seems like people dig what we’re doing so far, which I’m grateful for.
I’ve been lucky enough to collaborate with Geoff Shaw on several projects. He’s now a (trumpets blare) Stormbreaker (a well-deserved honor). I was really hoping he’d say yes to working on Deadpool, because he’s got this gritty, grounded sensibility (even when dealing with the wildest scenarios) that I love and that felt like a perfect fit. Thankfully, he was game. And like me, he was excited to stretch some different muscles and play with humor (as well as horrifying ultra-violence).

AIPT: Well, speaking of — X-Fan Alex of X says Wade’s red suit is kind of a bummer when it comes to seeing him hurt — can’t see blood gushing, because the fabric is red! How do you and Geoff go about making sure that, when Wade is hurting — really hurting — that comes across on the page?
Ben: Tear off an arm. Blow out an eyeball. Char him to a crisp. Break his heart. I can do this all day, Alex of X!

AIPT: X-Fan The Majestic Phenomenal Whacky Fan of ‘Pool says Deadpool has gone through major highs, like becoming a parent, to serious lows, with losing things he cherishes. What are you most interested in exploring with him in this run?
Ben: In our book, Deadpool might be cracking jokes, but the world is dead serious. Everyone else views him as a damaged lunatic. There’s no silliness outside of his own antics. “The Tears of a Clown” could be the soundtrack to this series. Because Wade is laughing out of one side of his mouth and sobbing out of the other. We’re taking the scalpel to him and taking a hard look at what’s inside that makes him this way.

AIPT: X-Fan Mikey T says Deadpool isn’t a villain, but he’s not a straight-up hero either. In your opinion, how does someone as mentally unstable as Wade create his own moral code and still have audiences relate to him?
Ben: My feeling is, Deadpool needs someone in his life who grounds him. That’s Blind Al, in our run. Wade loves and respects her, even though he won’t admit to such sincere feelings. He’ll fight for her. He’ll allow her to slap him upside the head and call him on his bullshit. She’s a friend. She’s a roommate. She’s a colleague. She’s a maternal figure. His compass spins without someone like this to help him find his focus (and troubled morality).

AIPT: X-Fan Patrick Maloney wouldn’t think to pit Deadpool and Hammerhead against one another, but their feud is what has Patrick most excited about your run so far. What made you interested in bringing in Hammerhead?
Ben: To repeat something I said before: Deadpool might be funny, but the world of this series isn’t. Deadpool isn’t going to save the world or fight aliens or ride on the back of a dinosaur in this book. He’s going to live in a crummy basement apartment and try to scheme ways to make the rent and buy bigger guns. A cosmic entity isn’t his foil; an a-hole gangster is.

AIPT: Alright, Ben — here come the character questions! Let’s start with X-Fan Bill, who says, obviously, we’re going to eventually find out what’s happening with Ellie. But can we expect to see Wade’s other daughter, Princess, any time soon?
Ben: Anything and everything is on the table. It’s just a matter of how long this series goes.
AIPT: X-Fan @PR_Deadpool1995 is loving your Deadpool run and was wondering if we’ll see a new love interest or an old flame at any point.
Ben: Right now, I’m focusing more on the platonic (and tough) love that exists between him and Blind Al. But again, we’ll see how far down the road we get. The more readers, the more stories ahead.
AIPT: X-Fan DoomSupreme wonders if we’ll see Wade interacting with heroes he has a decent relationship with in this run, like Wolverine or even Spider-Man.
Ben: Here’s a tease. When I was writing Wolverine and Ghost Rider… I couldn’t resist pushing them together. That’s not an official announcement. That’s just math that makes sense.

AIPT: Interesting… As we wrap up, by now, folks have read Wade Wilson: Deadpool #3. What can you tease about what comes next?
Ben: Big trouble. Bloodshed. Heartbreak. Wild action. Scatological humor.
AIPT: Before we go, one more question from X-Fan Mikey T. Let’s say you and Wade are on a road trip, arguing over the music. What’s the one song that comes on that gets you both to call a truce and sing it like it’s your job?
Ben: “Total Eclipse of the Heart.”
AIPT: And on that note — Ben, thanks for stopping by X-Men Monday!
X-Fans, fortunately, you won’t have to wait too long for Wade Wilson: Deadpool #4, as it goes on sale May 6, 2026. But in the meantime, here’s the eXclusive lettered preview, courtesy of our friends at Marvel, featuring writing by Benjamin Percy, pencils and inks by Geoff Shaw, colors by Alex Sinclair, and letters from VC’s Joe Sabino!
