Kill or Be Killed #10 Review

Remember that demon that’s (allegedly) behind all the craziness with Dylan having to kill people to stay alive? Well, get ready to see a lot of him in the final issue of Kill or Be Killed’s second story arc.

First Read Reactions

• Poor Lily Sharpe. She has to suffer through horrible/incompetent co-workers and an unfair (but still good) point of view shift.
• Gotta say, a scene with Dylan telling the demon to buzz off in the middle of a graveyard is as chilling as it is hilarious.
• Having your own personal demon is hard enough without it following you to your mom’s house.
• Daisy deserves so much better than this.
• I know Kira is in the right here, but the story is making me feel irrationally opposed to her.
• Bad: Planning to dump your girlfriend at an art show.
• Even worse: Seeing an old friend show up in your girlfriend’s art show.

The Verdict

Despite the aforementioned POV shift, Brubaker/Breitweiser/Phillips do a marvelous job setting up Lily Sharpe for much bigger things down the road. Combine that with how wonderfully they portray the agent’s disdain/frustration at the incompetence surrounding her, and I’m willing to forgive the narrative cheat it took to get there.

As far as Dylan is concerned, this is the most I’ve ever felt disconnected from his thought process—and yet it still works. Everything he feels is genuine, including the stuff that isn’t necessarily “right.” The demon greatly helps with this, laying out compelling arguments why Dylan is in no position to take a righteous or ethical stance.

It feels good to finally start to see Dylan as less relatable and more selfish…although it’s weird (and brilliant from a writing standpoint) that this paradigm shift is in part achieved by him deciding not to kill anymore.

The issue doesn’t have much in the way of action, but it does ramp up the narrative in such a way that the story can’t help but boil over into at least a little craziness next month. Demon or no demon, Dylan’s in for one hell of a reckoning.
