I’m not well versed in Planet of the Apes, so I was a little worried that a lot of this comic would be lost on me. But credit where credit’s due: Ryan Ferrier does a great job of catching you up, filling you in and building the world throughout this introductory issue of a pretty wild crossover.
This does come at a slight cost of exposition on almost every page, but you can spend that time looking at Carlos Magno’s art which is reminiscent of Leinil Yu via Gary Frank. At times, though, it falls short. There are some great pages in this issue but a couple of panels here and there do let it down.
It’s hard to tell the apes apart at times but fortunately they call each other by name in almost every encounter, which does become a little tedious but I understand the need for it.
Those looking for an action packed monster mash, like myself, might be a little disappointed with issue #1, however there is enough going on to keep you engaged. There’s the political power play between the apes which I’m sure fans of POTA expect to be there. There’s a great CSI-style crime scene which is pretty cool and adds to the silliness of the whole thing. Like seriously, it’s about Kong on a planet of apes.

I was hoping for more from this comic but I’m not really sure what I expected. It’s definitely one for Planet of the Apes fans and although it succeeds in filling in any gaps you might have in regards to that franchise, it didn’t really make me care too much about it or where it’s going.
Overall it’s not a badly written or drawn book but it’s not a particularly great one either. There’s no real substance or charm which is a shame as I feel like with a few tweaks it could have easily ticked more boxes for me.
