The Guardians of the universe are pretty much dead, which is good because they screwed over the Green Lanterns before. The thing is, a balance is necessary and so too are they. Two remain, but Venditti clearly wants to shake things up after we read this issue.

Why does this matter?
Robert Venditti has been writing one of the most fun Green Lantern stories I’ve read in some time. He’s managed to juggle a lot of characters while offering up one giant story after another. He’s infused the DCU with some big-time space action that is sorely needed.
Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?
You know he’s screwed.
Tom Derenick draws the breakdowns with Jack Herbert on pencils and inks and together they draw some interesting layouts and constructs. It appears Hal gets the most detail because the shading and details in his face are by far better than most in this issue.
Venditti opens the issue with an attack on a Guardian and then cuts to the remaining two Guardians and that spells doom for them. The book has a nice bookended feel due to the location at the start ending the issue too. Along the way, Venditti allows Kyle and Hal to have some fun rescuing folks, gives John Stewart a moment to lighten up (but also remind us Guardians aren’t to be trusted) and sets up a new young Lantern. By all accounts, this is a setup issue that will delight fans who have a deeper knowledge of the DCU. That’s because a major player shows up that should properly mix things up and make the Green Lanterns’ lives a living hell.
The biggest takeaway from this issue is going to be the new Lantern that’s on the cover. She’s super young and the question of setting an age range is brought up. Thing is, the ring chooses its Lantern so how can you argue if she’s not ready? She also supplies a good deal of admiration and hope from Stewart, which makes me nervous she’s getting offed later on in this story arc.

It’s a table setting issue for sure, especially evident when Kyle and Hal are given a throwaway sort of mission to occupy them and give the issue some action. The bi-weekly format of this title is quite evident as it’s in no rush to progress the plot, but that’s the sort of thing this format delivers.
Is It Good?
A new story arc starts off laying the seeds for some interesting developments in one of DC’s best series.
