Judging by the Cover – 12/13/17 new releases

Eric and Chris select the best covers from this week’s new comic releases.

Most comic book fans have a pretty good idea of what they’re going to buy every week when they visit their local comic shop. With that said, there’s still a lot of fun to be had just glancing at the week’s new releases and taking a chance on a book that looks promising. That’s where covers come in–a fantastic image can make the difference between trying something new or saying, “Nah, not this week.”

In that spirit, here are the covers that captured Editor-at-Large Chris Hassan and contributor Eric Cline’s attention this week.

Chris’ Picks:

Mister Miracle #5
Art by Nick DeringtonJudging by the Cover - 12/13/17 new releasesMister Miracle by writer Tom King and artist Mitch Gerads is something special, and this is just the type of cover that captures that magic. I’ve been looking forward to this “date night” issue since Gerads teased it to me at Rhode Island Comic Con last month. With all that said, I Iove this alternate cover by Doom Patrol artist Nick Derington, as it captures the relationship between Scott Free and Big Barda that’s at the heart of this series.

X-Men Blue #17
Art by Arthur Adams
Judging by the Cover - 12/13/17 new releasesWhile I was never a fan of Marvel’s 2099 line, I can’t help but get nostalgic seeing that X-Men 2099 title font on the cover of my favorite comic series, X-Men Blue. Arthur Adams has been creating one great cover after another on this series, and this one reminds me of those old-school X-Men covers that integrated the logo into the action. The Blue squad is truly out of there element here and I can’t wait to read it!

Bug! The Adventures of Forager #6
Art by Mike AllredJudging by the Cover - 12/13/17 new releases

I’ve never read an issue of Bug! The Adventures of Forager but have heard great things and plan to once it’s collected in a trade paperback. Also, how can you not love this cover? From Mister Miracle and Orion to Darkseid–Mike Allred crushes it when he draws Jack Kirby’s designs. Heck, remove all the lettering on this image and you’ve got a vibrant piece of pop art ready to be framed and hung on your wall!

Eric’s Picks:

Wildstorm: Michael Cray #3
Art by John Paul Leon
Judging by the Cover - 12/13/17 new releasesI have an affinity for covers that have a million things going on at once while still somehow managing not to look too busy. This one does that for me; it may be a still image but it conveys the wide scope of the strange and dangerous world that Cray inhabits. The use of violet looks beautiful against the bold white background, and all the various details are placed very cleanly and cohesively. This cover is a kickass poster just waiting to happen.

Port of Earth #2
Art by Giovanni Timpano
Judging by the Cover - 12/13/17 new releasesWhat the hell is this thing? I don’t know, but it’s firing on all sorts of classic sci-fi cylinders for me: weird and saggy flesh, multiple appendages, the integration of technology and tubes housing unknown fluids… not to mention that disturbing face. A good cover catches the eye, and this one definitely does that. If anything, it leaves me feeling afraid that it’s staring back at me, too. The orange overlay pops really well against the gray background as well.

Mister Miracle #5
Art by Mitch Gerads
Judging by the Cover - 12/13/17 new releasesI’m a sucker for Valentine’s-esque covers. This one’s simple but sweet; the colors are great, the characters’ dynamics with each other are captured well, and there’s some Kirby dots in the mix to boot.
