Why won’t Ridley Scott ever direct Star Wars? “Because I know what I’m doing”

The legendary ‘Alien’ director doesn’t have kind words when it comes to Disney’s money-printing machine.

Director Rian Johnson was plucked from relative obscurity to direct the second installment to the most anticipated trilogy of all time, and was even given his own trilogy separate from the so-called "Skywalker saga" before The Last Jedi even hit theaters.

With no end in sight to the Star Wars machine, it stands to reason we’ll see dozens of directors try their hand at making their mark on George Lucas’s legendary creation. Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear that one of those names will be Ridley Scott.

In a recent interview with Vulture, Scott was asked if Lucasfilm has offered him a role in creating a new Star Wars film. "No, no. I’m too dangerous for that," was his reply. When asked why that is, Ridley’s response certainly makes it sound as though he’s not interested, and reads like he’s throwing shade on Rian Johnson, and even the franchise as a whole:

Because I know what I’m doing. [Laughs.] I think they like to be in control, and I like to be in control myself. When you get a guy who’s done a low-budget movie and you suddenly give him $180 million, it makes no sense whatsoever. It’s fuckin’ stupid. You know what the reshoots cost? Millions! Millions. You can get me for my fee, which is heavy, but I’ll be under budget and on time. This is where experience does matter, it’s as simple as that! It can make you dull as dishwater, but if you’re really experienced and you know what you’re doing, it’s fucking essential. Grow into it, little by little. Start low-budget, get a little bit bigger, maybe after $20 million, you can go to $80. But don’t suddenly go to $160.

Well, there you have it. Don’t expect the legendary Alien director to try his hand at Star Wars any time soon.
