December 2017’s top selling comic books: DC dominates with Doomsday Clock, Batman leading the charge

DC had another banner month.

DC’s had a pretty good few months. Their Batman-centric Metal event has been a huge hit, and it looks like the long-awaited (and feared) Watchmen sequel, Doomsday Clock will follow suit. The second issue of Geoff Johns’ new series claimed the top spot in December, shipping and estimated 158,603 units. Beyond that? Well, a whole lot of Batman.

Besides the aforementioned Metal, whose fourth issue claimed the second spot on the list, Tom King’s Batman was represented twice with #36 in the number four slot and #37 at number five, and Metal spinoffs Batman: White Knight and Hawkman Found making appearances in the top ten as well.

The only Marvel title to reach the top five is a big one: Phoenix Resurrection: The Return of Jean Grey, which sold a commendable 145,057 units. Other than that, Spider-Man was the only property keeping Marvel in the race, with Amazing Venom, Inc. and Amazing Spider-Man coming in at #7 and #10, respectively.

1) Doomsday Clock #2

AiPT! Score:

9.5

Est. Units Sold: 158,603
“This is an excellent book even if you remove your understanding of Watchmen. The visual storytelling across each page is at times riveting with amazing character acting requiring no dialogue at all. It’s the kind of comic you’ll read over and over to understand the layers of meaning and clues.”

2) Dark Nights: Metal #4

AiPT! Score:

6.0

Est. Units Sold: 152,567
“I’m not giving up on Dark Nights: Metal, certainly. I will be taking each issue slowly, though, making sure that I’m clear who I’m following down which dark rabbit hole. I want to see where this is going, but I am concerned that the two remaining issues just won’t be enough space to tell the story that they’ve set up. I hope I’m wrong.”

3) Phoenix Resurrection: The Return of Jean Grey #1

AiPT! Score:

10

Est. Units Sold: 145,057
“Between this comic and last week’s breathtaking X-Men: Grand Design #1 by Ed Piskor, it’s possible Jean has decided to bring the X-Men franchise with her as she rises from the ashes toward new heights of greatness.”

4) Batman #36

AiPT! Score:

8.5

Est. Units Sold: 94,385
“A strong issue wherein King skillfully weaves a deep analysis of friendship, fear of fraying that friendship and mutual respect with a conventional superhero team-up. Batman #36 is the first part of a story that fans of both characters should find charming, relatable and highly enjoyable.”

“Batman #37 is a fun, charming comic — plain and simple. A Silver Age story infused with a modern day twist, “Superfriends” Part Two will make you laugh, make you think, and by issue’s end, unable to wipe the smile off your face.”

“A good start to a new Venom series that’s in canon and raring to make the Symbiote a much more complex character. Eddie Brock and Flash Thompson may be fighting over their Symbiote, but things are getting a lot more complex in the world of aliens and Spider-Man.”

10) Amazing Spider-Man #792

AiPT! Score:

7.5

“I was a bit worried for this story arc with the first installment, but after seeing how Slott and Costa write the dynamic between Spider-Man and Anti-Venom Flash Thompson I’m all in. Time for them to bro down and for Marvel to make magic with the Symbiote mythos!”
