Judging by the Cover – 1/24/18 new releases

Connor and Eric select the best covers from this week’s new comic releases.

Most comic book fans have a pretty good idea of what they’re going to buy every week when they visit their local comic shop. With that said, there’s still a lot of fun to be had just glancing at the week’s new releases and taking a chance on a book that looks promising. That’s where covers come in-a fantastic image can make the difference between trying something new or saying, “Nah, not this week.”

In that spirit, here are the covers that captured contributors Connor Willesden and Eric Cline’s attention this week.

Connor’s Picks:

Doom Patrol #10
Art by Nick Derington

Judging by the Cover - 1/24/18 new releases

Doom Patrol is a very surreal book that has a cover for the issue to match. Combining some real images composited with each other and Derington’s art creates a very surreal cover.

Nightwing The New Order #6
Art by Trevor McCarthy

Judging by the Cover - 1/24/18 new releases

The New Order’s final issue cover brings together so many characters into the picture while continuing the theme of the book and covers for the grand finale. This image builds expectations that it’ll be a big one.

Doomsday Clock #3
Art by Gary Frank

Judging by the Cover - 1/24/18 new releases

With the story events building off the finale of the last issue, this variant cover links with the book’s theme of the Watchmen universe having parts connect and shows that through Batman reading Rorschach’s journal. As usual, Gary Frank’s artwork is amazing and it really shows with this cover.

Eric’s Picks:

The Wild Storm #11
Art by Jon Davis-Hunt

Judging by the Cover - 1/24/18 new releases

Yet another strong Wild Storm cover this month! Jon Davis-Hunt does a great job capturing a specific moment in time here. Grifter is posed perfectly for having just hit the ground with his pointed feet, the flow of his hair, and his guns at the ready. The rest of the cast looks good too. I particularly love the way Hunt renders Void’s portal appearing out of thin air.

Detective Comics #973
Art by Rafael Albuquerque

Judging by the Cover - 1/24/18 new releases

This cover is silly, and that’s why I dig it. Text on covers can feel tedious when there’s too much of it or if it’s vague, but the “BANG!” here is clear, brief, and makes me ask: “Who got shot? Who shot them?” Funny faces AND plot relevancy? Great job on Rafael Albuquerque’s part here.

Inhumans: Judgment Day #1
Art by Jae Lee
Judging by the Cover - 1/24/18 new releases

Jae Lee manages the impossible here: He makes the Inhumans look like their television selves, but also cool at the same time. If anyone could do it, it’s him; as far as I’m concerned, Lee is the definitive Inhumans artist. The background is pretty, Medusa’s hair is moving like it’s supposed to, and these characters look like ones I’d actually want to see on screen–shame how that turned out.
