Jon Favreau to executive produce and write a live-action Star Wars series

Lucasfilm signs Jon Favreau to direct a new series for Disney’s streaming service.

Lucasfilm announced today that they’ve tapped Jon Favreau to executive produce and write a live-action Star Wars series that will debut on their new streaming service in late 2019. With this announcement Disney has made it clear how important Star Wars is to their much anticipated streaming service; the existing Star Wars films will join Favreau’s series as exclusive content on their streaming platform.

“I couldn’t be more excited about Jon coming on board to produce and write for the new direct-to-consumer platform,” says Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. “Jon brings the perfect mix of producing and writing talent, combined with a fluency in the Star Wars universe. This series will allow Jon the chance to work with a diverse group of writers and directors and give Lucasfilm the opportunity to build a robust talent base.”

Favreau has an established relationship with Disney thanks to his previous collaborations on Iron Man and Iron Man 2, the first of which was the foundation for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He also directed and produced the live-action version of The Jungle Book and is currently in production on Disney’s live-action remake of The Lion King.

It’s an exciting time to be a Star Wars fan. Lucasfilm announced in November that The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson would write a new trilogy that breaks from the Skywalker family. Solo: A Star Wars Story debuts in less than three months on May 25th and it was recently revealed that a separate series of films will come from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

“If you told me at 11 years old that I would be getting to tell stories in the ‘Star Wars’ universe, I wouldn’t have believed you,” Favreau said. “I can’t wait to embark upon this exciting adventure.”

Disney and Lucasfilm have not announced a date for the new Star Wars live-action series.
