Infinity War released at the end of April and possibly moved the summer movie season from its unofficial beginning of the first weekend of May. There are a pair of potential blockbusters that the summer is known for releasing, but is there anything that can stand up to the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
May 4th
Overboard (Nationwide): An interesting choice for a remake since the original wasn’t a critical darling or huge commercial success. It did have its charm, though, and the remake may be a refreshing change in a cinematic landscape filled with huge special effects.
Racer and the Jailbird (Limited): Adele Exarchopoulos from Blue is the Warmest Color stars in this heist film that seems to have an interesting premise behind its unwieldy name.
May 10th
DIGIMON ADVENTURE tri.: Coexistence (One Day Only): The fifth film in the Digimon Adventure tri. series will be seeing its U.S release in a one night only special.
May 11th
Breaking In (Nationwide): Gabrielle Union stars in this thriller about a single mother protecting her children from criminals who will stop at nothing to get what they want.
Life of the Party (Nationwide): This comedy has Melissa McCarthy returning to college and apparently becoming the life of campus parties after her husband leaves her. The catch? Her daughter goes to the same school and is not happy. Let the hilarity ensue.
Terminal (Limited): Margot Robbie, Simon Pegg, and Mike Meyers in a movie about two hitmen employed by a mysterious employer. The trailer has a neon filled noir look to it.
May 18th
Deadpool 2 (Nationwide): Ryan Reynolds returns as the Merc With a Mouth in what looks to be the rare excellent sequel. After his great performance as Thanos, Josh Brolin plays Deadpool’s frenemy Cable.
May 25th
Solo: A Star Wars Story (Nationwide): It has been a troubled production, but the next Star Wars movie is here. Directed by Ron Howard, the movie centers on a young Han Solo. Since there is no longer a middle ground with Star Wars movies and the internet, expect this movie to be either cherished or loathed.
Mary Shelley (Limited): Elle Fanning stars as the writer of Frankenstein in a movie about her relationship Percy Bysshe Shelley and her inspiration for the horror classic.
There are a couple of big releases and a few odd ones (Book Club and Dog Show look horrible) but the big movie news will probably be the MCU for a few more weeks.
