The first prelude to the big BatCat wedding is here and it’s a pretty fun time. Written by Tim Seeley with artwork by Brad Walker and Otto Schmidt, Robin vs. Ra’s Al Ghul is a great way to kick off these preludes. Seeley writes some great interactions between characters while Walker illustrates the majority of the issue. Meanwhile Schmidt draws a chilling epilogue to the issue that shows the interweaving story throughout the one shots.
So what’s it about?
The official summary reads:
Ra’s al Ghul returns to have a heart-to-heart with his grandson, Damian. Once upon a time, Ra’s thought Bruce Wayne would be the heir apparent to his criminal empire, but now that Batman has turned his back on Talia for good, Ra’s wants to know if Damian Wayne will honor his mother by stepping into the family business at last.

The interactions between Selina and Damian in this issue are both interesting and super sweet. They’re sweet in the fact that they both realize that they aren’t going to be comfortable with the idea of Damian calling Selina ‘mom’ and having a parent-child relationship but instead work around the fact and show they care about each other dearly due to their mutual connection to Bruce.
The interesting part is what is below from Gotham City Sirens #7, which is their only real previous meeting. In this meeting Damian is very flippant of Catwoman and just wants Dick Grayson to hurry up so they can leave. In doing so he also calls her a ‘tramp’ and I am kind of relieved it’s not mentioned again here.
Damian’s interactions with Ra’s and the drugged visions he sees are super cool too. Once again Damian as a trenchcoated post-apocalypse Batman as first seen in Batman #666 written by Grant Morrison. DC has referenced this version a few times recently with the last time being in the Super Sons of Tomorrow crossover in late 2017. It also shows the messed up relationship that Damian has with his mother’s side of the family. Also Damian having a favorite arcade machine is great!
