Marvel’s Iron Fist web-based television series has been cancelled. This marks the first time in the history of Marvel’s partnership with Netflix that the streaming service has decided not to renew one of Marvel’s super hero inspired series.
Following the announcement, the show’s Twitter page sent out a Tweet featuring a photo of Finn Jones in his Iron Fist costume, with the word “Immortal” written across his chest. The Tweet reads “The story is never over,” and contains a link.

The link leads to Marvel’s digital comics shop, where Typhoid Fever: Iron Fist (2018) #1 is featured and available for pre-order. Typhoid Fever is a three-issue Marvel crossover series, featuring a team-up of Spider-Man, the X-Men and Iron Fist against Typhoid Mary. The synopsis for the Iron Fist issue reads:
Typhoid Mary is stronger than ever, and Spider-Man and the X-Men know that better than anyone as they’ve been forced to fight among themselves. As her powers grow stronger, it’s only a matter of time before Typhoid Mary turns Manhattan into her own personal playground – if not her own personal ashtray. Luckily, IRON FIST is in town and willing to lend a hand…er…fist. But will the Master of Kung Fu be able to stop the flames from spreading, or will he just add fuel to the fire?
Typhoid Mary was a villain featured in the second and final season of Marvel’s Iron Fist, and was played by Alice Eve. The villain has also been known as Mutant Zero and Bloody Mary. First introduced in the late 80’s as an enemy of Daredevil, she later feuded with both Spider-Man and Deadpool. She’s known for her psionic powers and dissociative identity disorder, which causes her to have three distinct personalities.
It’s more than likely that the idea behind this Tweet is to provide disappointed fans of the show with an avenue through which they can still enjoy the Iron Fist character. After all, the character originated from a comic book, and has had several stories counted as among some of the best in Marvel comics’ history – such as Matt Fraction and Ed Brubaker’s The Immortal Iron First: The Last Iron Fist Story and the following arc, The Immortal Iron Fist: The Seven Capital Cities of Heaven.
But it’s also possible that this tweet and the story it points fans to is a tease for the future of the Iron Fist character on the big screen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Spider-Man is one of the newer characters to come to the MCU and Deadpool has just arrived with Disney’s purchase of Fox’s film properties. Both characters could easily team up with Danny Rand on the streets of New York in a future team-up film. While this is admittedly rather unlikely, stranger things have happened.
“We’re thankful to the fans who have watched these two seasons, and for the partnership we’ve shared on this series. While the series on Netflix has ended, the immortal Iron Fist will live on,” said Netflix and Marvel.
So the question we have to ask is will the Iron Fist character live on in strictly comics for the foreseeable future, or is it possible there are already plans in place to get him back in the MCU? I’ve got my fingers crossed for the latter of the two.
Fans can enjoy watching Iron Fist’s fellow Defenders member, Daredevil and the third season of his Netflix series which premieres on Netflix on October 19.
