The entire fourth season of Daredevil was planned out at the time of cancellation

What could have been.

Two days ago, to the shock and disappointed of the pop culture world, Netflix announced the cancellation of Marvel’s Daredevil. The unexpected news comes after three award winning and critically acclaimed seasons.

After the cancellation of Iron Fist, and Luke Cage, two of Marvel’s other super heroes series on Netflix, many fans were fearful that Daredevil and Jessica Jones might soon follow suit. It looks like those fears were well founded, and considering how highly rated Daredevil was throughout its run, there’s no reason to believe Jessica Jones is safe.

The news is particularly disappointing since season 4 of Daredevil was already in the works. Earlier this month Erik Oleson, executive producer, writer, and season 3 showrunner — shared with fans on Twitter that he had pitched season 4.

Perhaps even more disappointing though, was the Tweet Daredevil writer Sam Ernst shared yesterday which revealed that the yet-to-be fourth season had been laid out in its entirety. Ernst wrote the twelfth episode of season 3 and co-wrote episode nine with series showrunner Erik Oleson.

Fans shouldn’t give up on this character and crew just yet though. In a statement issued by Marvel on the cancellation of the series, the company had this to say “We look forward to more adventures with the Man without Fear in the future.”

To further support this possibility, we can look to the statement Netflix issued to Deadline, “While the series on Netflix has ended, the three existing seasons will remain on the service for years to come, while the Daredevil character will live on in future projects for Marvel.”

Marvel has issued similar statements regarding the characters Iron Fist and Luke Cage after their series were cancelled, and it isn’t exactly hard to guess where the Defenders crew is likely to end up.

Disney’s upcoming streaming service, Disney+ is slated to launch late next year and the Mickey Mouse company has promised fans original series from Marvel and Star Wars properties. In addition to Disney+ there’s also the Marvel Cinematic Universe to consider. The MCU is easily one of, if not the best ongoing cinematic universe, and fans would undoubtedly flock to theaters to see the Defenders crew on the big screen.

Marvel’s Daredevil season 3 is available now to stream on Netflix.
