It has been long enough that we haven’t seen Dr. Doom in the Fantastic Four’s fresh start, but what about Galactus? Dan Slott is going for the supervillain double whammy with Fantastic Four #6, which follows the big wedding special. Can Dr. Doom spruce up this series and make it truly glorious? Oh yes, he can.

Why does this matter?

This issue really leans into Dr. Doom being the arrogant mastermind that he is while also building up a whole new story arc in the process. We’ve never seen Galactus like this, and truth be told, he’s only just now getting back into the world-eating business. It should be fun to see how these character dynamics change.

This issue is really good with the banter. Mr. Fantastic, Thing, Human Torch, and Invisible Woman all sound like they should. They’re family and you can grasp how they’re closer than most via this well-written dialogue. How they react to threats is also great and Slott doesn’t let us forget they’re a tight-knit team. Counter to this, Slott does a great job reminding us Dr. Doom finds his strength in doing things alone. It’s a striking juxtaposition witnessing the Fantastic Four solving problems together while Dr. Doom tries and usually ends up failing, on his own.
Put your new-character hats on folks, because we get the introduction of Victorious in this issue. Hyped at San Diego Comic-Con 2018, this character is a hero for the Latverian people and her powers are cosmic based. She fights for Dr. Doom, but also seems to have her own personality. Somehow she is connected to the appearance of Galactus and it should be fun to see how Slott uses her.
Aaron Kuder draws this issue and he does a splendid job with the splash pages and scope of how big some of these characters are. Galactus is huge and you don’t lose sight of that. Dr. Doom has great texture in his mask and gloves, reminding us of his tech prowess. There are also some fantastic magical elements that look spot on as Dr. Doom attacks Galactus. Victorious also comes off as a superpower due to the great introductory splash page.
It can’t be perfect, can it?
This is a high-energy issue that quickens the pace from the previous issues. There is however a somewhat odd cut away to Alicia and the Richards kids. It’s nice that Slott wants to remind us they’re still around, but seems entirely unnecessary given we saw them quite a bit in the last issue and this is mostly a Dr. Doom and Galactus focused action issue.
Is it good?
What a change of pace this issue brings to the series! Slott and Kuder are running full steam ahead with tons of action, new elements, but most of all a great handle on the characters. The first family is back and it’s a walloping good time.
