It’s time to get “Hunted” in the latest mini-event from Marvel Comics. There’s a bit of a twist on what Kraven is up to in Amazing Spider-Man however, as he’s not hunting Spidey, but his animal-themed rogues gallery. This mini-event is adding a new kind of numbering to the comics and this time it’s with “HU” numbering. The first issue in this event focuses on Black Cat who may be a prime target for Kraven’s little game.

If you’re on board for the “Hunted” event, you should read this. It begins the story, and also adds new flashback moments revealing more about Black Cat and Spider-Man’s relationship.

This issue delves into the very odd experience of remembering things that were once stricken from your mind. Black Cat had a relationship with Peter for years, but Doctor Strange erased everyone’s memories so that Peter’s identity as Spider-Man was again a secret. A few issues back, however, Peter told Black Cat who he really was, which has opened up memories locked away. Writer Nick Spencer shows readers what that experience is like and how it hits her at inopportune times. This allows Spencer to break up the action and deliver on flashbacks whenever he feels like. This also adds some character development for Black Cat who is only now remembering the intimate relationship she had with Spider-Man.
While all that is happening, the “Hunted” aspect of the story is carrying forward. Black Cat is working for Hammerhead, who has her on the tail of Taskmaster and Black Ant. This leads to some exciting fight scenes and some new revelations for Black Cat. There’s also a funny moment where characters wonder if Hammerhead is also an animal-themed villain they should nab.
Iban Coello draws this issue with some slinky Black Cat battling looking tight. The flashbacks have a cleaner style, helping set them apart from the main narrative (colors by Edgar Delgado) and it’s drawn in a respectful but sexy sort of way when necessary.

It can’t be perfect, can it?
Hammerhead has never really done it for me, nor was his overly dramatic role in Bendis’ Defenders all that intriguing. There are two or so pages where Black Cat and Hammerhead reminisce about her role as the Queenpin of Crime that fills pages rather than gets on with the “Hunted” storyline. Overall this issue gives the bigger story a nudge in the right direction, but if you’re looking for an issue heavily important to the tie-in, you can skip this one.
Is it good?
An enjoyable issue that revels in the relationship between Spider-Man and Black Cat. Spencer does a good job establishing how important that relationship was to them. There’s also a great bit of detective work done for Black Cat’s character. By the end, you’ll respect the character even more.
