Be prepared for 80’s nostalgia to hit you hard.

Netflix has released the first trailer for The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, the upcoming prequel to the beloved 1982 Jim Henson / Frank Oz film, The Dark Crystal.

The series is based on J.M. Lee’s recent Dark Crystal companion novels, Shadows of the Dark Crystal and Song of the Dark Crystal, and follows three Gelflings – Rian, Brea and Deet – in their journey to save the planet Thra. As the three discover the secret behind the evil Skeksis’ power, the cracked Dark Crystal, they find the guardians of their planet are being transformed into horrible monsters. By the time the Gelflings realize the extent of the the damage done to their planet and the guardians who protect it, it’s nearly too late, and they desperately try to organize a rebellion.

Netflix and The Jim Henson company have truly outdone themselves with the planet Thra and the creatures who inhabit it. The planet appears lush, and full of unique and mysterious creatures. Watching the trailer one feels a real sense of wonder and magic.

Jeffrey Addiss, Will Matthews, and Javier Grillo-Marxuach, wrote the ten episode series, with Louis Leterrier serving as director. Filming began in the United Kingdom in November 2017.

At the time of The Dark Crystal’s release in 1982, the animatronics used in the film were considered groundbreaking — which are a significant contributing factor to the film garnering a cult following. At New York Comic Con last year, Leterrier assured fans that the series would depend almost entirely on puppetry, and CGI would only be used with green screens to remove puppeteers.

The three Gelflings are voiced by Taron Egerton (Rocketman), Anya Taylor-Joy (Glass) and Nathalie Emmanuel (Game of Thrones). Additional voice talent includes Caitriona Balfe, Helena Bonham Carter, Natalie Dormer, Eddie Izzard, Toby Jones, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mark Strong, Alicia Vikander, Mark Hamill, Jason Isaacs, Keegan-Michael Key, Simon Pegg and Andy Samberg.

The series premieres on Netflix on August 30th, 2019.
