Danny Boyle reveals that another 28 Days Later film is in the works

Everyone’s favorite rage-virus is coming back for another round of infection.

In 2002 Danny Boyle terrified audiences with his smash hit post-apocalyptic horror film, 28 Days Later. Boyle changed the zombie film game by adding fast zombies, like, really fast zombies. And before the horror purist come out with their pitchforks, yes, technically speaking, the infected aren’t zombies. But still, they’re infected with a virus, they spread it through biting/clawing/blood, and they eat human flesh.

Regardless of your opinion on the classification of Boyle’s monsters, everyone can agree that his film breathed new life into the horror genre and added a facet to zombie films that fans had never seen before.

The film starred Breakfast on Pluto star Cillian Murphy in the lead role of Jim, a bike courier who wakes up 28 days after a rage-virus has decimated the UK and destroyed civilization. Not only was the film a success at the box office, but it also won numerous awards, and went over big with fans and critics alike.

A sequel was released five years later, 28 Weeks Later, and once again Boyle delighted fans as he completely horrified them.

Since then fans have been wondering if we’d ever see the series become a trilogy, well good news folks, it looks like another film is on the way.

“Alex Garland and I have a wonderful idea for the third part,” Boyle said in an interview with The Independent. “It’s properly good.”

“The original film led to a bit of a resurgence in the zombie drama and it doesn’t reference any of that. It doesn’t feel stale at all.” he continued. “He’s concentrating on directing his own work at the moment, so it’s stood in abeyance really, but it’s a you-never-know.”

Garland wrote the first film, and served as an executive producer on the sequel. He made his directorial debut in 2014 with the feature film Ex Machina.

“We’ve just started talking about it seriously. We’ve got an idea. Danny Boyle and producer Andrew Macdonald and I have been having quite serious conversations about it so it is a possibility. It’s complicated.” said Garland in an interview with IGN in 2015. “There’s a whole bunch of reasons why it’s complicated, which are boring so I won’t go into, but there’s a possibility. It’s more likely to be 28 Months than 28 Years. 28 months gives you one more place to go.”

Let’s hope things aren’t too complicated and we see the third sometime in the near future.
