Rip Torn has passed away at the age of 88

Rip Torn, emmy winner and prolific actor has died at the age of 88.

Six time Emmy Award nominee Rip Torn has passed away at the age of 88. Rip Torn, born Elmore Rual Torn Jr., gained notoriety for his acting career that began in 1956. 

Known for his grin and raspy voice, Torn played a wide range of characters. His performance as Artie the producer on The Larry Sanders Show was critically beloved and garnered him emmy nominations including one win for Best Supporting Actor. He also played over the top characters like Patches O’Houlihan in 2004’s Dodgeball.  

Rip Torn has passed away at the age of 88

 In addition to his work on The Larry Sanders Show, he appeared in multiple plays and directed one. His first big break on stage came when he earned a role in Elia Kazan’s Sweet Bird of Youth in 1959. Since then he went on to take part in multiple television and movie roles. He also played Zed in the Men in Black series. Torn also appeared in the cult favorite 1982’s The Beastmaster. 

Torn passed away Tuesday evening in his Lakeville, Connecticut home.
