Angel #4 Review

Last issue, Angel got dropped into the inner workings of social media technology, which might as well be the worst type of hell.

This week, we get to see just how much better it is to have a vampire (with a soul) in the machine instead of a ghost.

Spoiler-Lite Recap

The Verdict

While not as strong as last issue, Angel #4 still provides a very solid and highly entertaining to the series’ first story arc.

The outcome of Angel’s showdown with the social media entity is predictable, but still wonderfully executed. Artist Gleb Melnikov hits on the mark on Angel’s action sequences while surrounding it all with a beautifully constructed technological hellscape.

I also love the way that Bryan Hill writes Angel. It’s the same dry/dark humor we’re used to, but punched up just enough to give us something fresh without straying from the character we know and love.

Meanwhile, Lilith finally did something! Unfortunately, it mostly consisted of cheating us out of a potentially great story arc for Fred, who also seems to have taken up Lilith’s exposition dump duties. I do, however, like the big upcoming war Fred was alluded to–especially since it will featuring yet another great/classic character from the show.

If the next story arc is as good as this one, then I think it’s safe to say that Angel officially becomes required reading for Buffyverse fans.

Is it good?

While not as strong as last issue, Angel #4 still provides a very solid and highly entertaining to the series' first story arc.

Angel's humor is as dry and dark as ever, but punched up just enough to feel fresh without betraying the original character.

Artist Gleb Melnikov hits on the mark on Angel's action sequences while surrounding it all with a beautifully constructed technological hellscape.

This issue sets us up for some great things next month.

The outcome of Angel's showdown with the social media entity is predictable (but still wonderfully executed).

Instead of dumping exposition, Lilith cheats out of a great potential story arc for Fred.

Fred takes over Lilith's exposition dumping duties.
