Most comic book fans have a pretty good idea what they’re going to buy every week when they visit their local comic shop. With that said, there’s still a lot of fun to be had just glancing at the week’s new releases and taking a chance on a book that looks promising. That’s where covers come in. A fantastic image can make the difference between trying something new or saying, “Nah, not this week.”
In that spirit, here are the covers that captured Casual Gaymer columnist Trevor Richardson and Manga Editor Eric Cline’s attention this week.

This cover really catches my eye because at a glance, it’s a portrait of Magneto in space and not a lot else. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but what elevates the cover is the painterly quality of how the colors blend into one another. The white and blue energy representing his magnetism is especially lovely and looks almost like liquid contained within Huddleston’s line-work. Masking his face in shadow makes him look all the more imposing.

You already know I’m gonna talk about the contrast between DD’s white suit and all that gorgeous red! I particularly love the chalky texture of the white on the red. It gives me a real crime scene vibe as if Matt was the victim’s chalk outline come to life to put the smackdown on those cops. The expressions are rendered with a lot of realism thanks to Tedesco’s careful shading. I love when an artist can add that much detail without cluttering up the image with too many lines.

Will the day ever come that I don’t pick a Stephanie Hans cover? This is a piece that walks just up to the line of busyness, but still keeps its feet firmly planted in a space where there’s just a lot to look at. My favorite details are all the little skulls at the center of the flowers and on the backs of the moths. DIE‘s covers often convey a multi-dimensional layer to the artwork, which is conveyed here by the mix of faded colors on the flowers behind the more solid red of the flames within the unfolded die. It’s another gorgeous cover from Hans in a series of knockouts.

Lovely painting? Check. Magneto looking imposing? Check. Flowy cape and energy effects? check. Well-rendered cosmos? Check. This is a nice cover.
Ghost Rider #1

There are multiple covers for this issue that I like, but this one’s my favorite. I dig how it essentially looks like a character reference sheet or like preliminary sketches. My favorite part is the rightmost figure– is that Ghost Rider with a satyr-esque leg?!
Daredevil #12

Julian Totino Tedesco has been consistently delivering striking Daredevil covers for months now. The white suit and batons stand out in stark contrast to the rest of the image’s red tones, and there’s a nice sense of motion as well.
