Hollywood remakes of popular television shows from the 1970s and 80s barely cause a stir any more. From shows about secret agents to the misadventures of a crime solving dog, there is seemingly no TV series exempt from being made into a movie. The hard part is making something new that is still true to the source material.
Blumhouse Productions are the latest production company to put their own spin on a well known television show. Home to horror franchises such as Paranormal Activity and The Purge, Blumhouse seems to be going in an interesting new direction with Fantasy Island. While the show had strong supernatural elements, it would be a stretch to describe it as horror.
The upcoming movie makes it clear it will differ from the show in that aspect. There is still an island on which guests can live out their fantasies, but the same silliness of the show is not seen. Instead, Blumhouse’s adaptation looks to be another addition to their horror movie library.
Fantasy Island is scheduled to release on February 14, 2020.
