Ring of Honor goes all in on Marty Scurll with big new contract

Marty Scurll re-signed with Ring of Honor as an in-ring talent, and is also taking on “lead booking duties” for the company according to PWInsider. It would appear that ROH is going all-in on The Villain, as F4WOnline added that it’s “the most lucrative deal in company history.”

The move comes as a surprise for multiple reasons. Many fans expected Scurll to join his Elite brethren in All Elite Wrestling, as he is the only member of the faction missing on Wednesday nights. And given that public perception of Ring of Honor is perhaps at an all time low, popular belief was that of all the potential homes for Scurll, ROH was last on the list.

Ring of Honor, once the crown jewel of American independent wrestling, is quite possibly at its creative nadir, due to a multitude of non-finishes, bizarre pushes, and a public airing of grievances from top brass. Their once-mutually beneficial deal with New Japan Pro Wrestling that saw NJPW compete stateside at ROH-branded events has all but evaporated, as NJPW attempts to make inroads in the United States alone with the recently formed New Japan Pro-Wrestling of America.

Now, it would appear at least part of ROH’s fate is in Marty Scurll’s hands. Hunter Johnston, known in the squared circle as Delirious, has been lead booker for ROH for some time, but effective immediately Scurll will join him with lead creative power.

In the ring, Scurll has held the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship, the NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team Championhip alongside the Young Bucks, the RevPro British Heavyweight Championship, and the ROH Television Championship, among others. So there’s no question he’s a decorated champion with tons of potential mass appeal, but whether or not the “most lucrative deal in history” will pan out — Marty was reportedly offered “WWE main roster money” to work around 40 dates a year — remains to be seen.
