SXSW (At Home): ‘Face to Face Time’ Review

‘Face to Face Time’ is funny and realistic.

AIPT will continue some of its planned coverage of SXSW. We have been in contact with creators and their representatives in order to continue to give films coverage. We will respect all embargoes and work to give these films and our readers the coverage we had planned.

Webcams and technology have been important parts of our personal lives for years. This is especially poignant in light of recent headlines. Virtual interactions have become more common – and necessary – than they ever have been. Cybersex and intimate interactions have been ahead of the curve in that aspect. Chances are, it was not long after the first webcam was functional that someone made a virtual booty call.

Face to Face Time is a short film that takes a humorous look at once such interaction. Izzy Shill plays Claire in a role everyone watching will know all too well. Before beginning her Facetime call she painstakingly prepares. From what she is wearing to how she is going to pose, anyone who has ever made a video call knows what Claire is going through. What happens before the SEND button is pushed may be the most important part of the call.

Things goes in the expected direction with the expected awkwardness. Claire is a very charming character and in these moments, Face to Face Time shows what it really is: a 1980’s teen romantic comedy in a modern setting. The short has all the modern conveniences while still managing to elicit a sense of nostalgia. After a great build and payoff, the ending feels somewhat abrupt, but it is a funny watch that is also embarrassingly familiar.
