Star Wars actor and dialect coach Andrew Jack has passed away at the age of 76 from coronavirus complications. Jack’s rep, Jill McCullough, shared the news on Tuesday morning with TMZ, who reports that Jack passed in a hospital outside of London after testing positive for COVID-19. To make an already sad situation even more tragic, the report goes on to explain that Jack’s wife couldn’t be with her husband during his passing because she’s currently quarantined in Australia.
As of not even a month ago Jack was working as a dialect coach for Robert Pattinson on Matt Reeve’s upcoming The Batman. The film was put on hold on March 14 due to the ongoing global pandemic, joining other big projects such as the fourth season of Netflix’s Stranger Things and Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which are now all in a standstill until further notice.
Star Wars fans will recognize Jack for the role that he’s perhaps best known for, Major Caluan Ematt, an officer in The Resistance in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. Jack was last seen as Ematt during the Battle of Crait in The Last Jedi where he led Resistance troops as a general in a desperate defense against Kylo Ren and The First Order. Jack also served as a dialect coach for the entire Sequel Trilogy, as well as stand alone films Rogue One and Solo.
Over his 30-plus year career in dialect coaching Jack worked on some incredibly famous films, such as Avengers: Endgame, Sherlock Holmes, Lord of the Rings, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Thor 3, The Last of the Mohicans, Captain America 1 & 2, Men In Black: International, and more.
