[CFF 2020] ‘The VICE Guide to Bigfoot’ Review: A funny look at unfulfilled aspirations and clickbait journalism

The Vice Guide to Bigfoot is a film that shows how life goals can be more elusive than capturing a mythical creature.

The VICE Guide to Bigfoot follows a VICE reporter named Brian who is tired of covering stories about craft beers and hipster nonsense. He is tired of writing clickbait. Reluctantly, he accepts  an assignment to follow a cryptozoologist on his hunt for Bigfoot. Brian and his producer Zach join Jeff on his mission to prove the existence of the legendary creature while learning about each other’s true missions in life. Funny and touching, The VICE Guide to Bigfoot is a film that shows how life goals can be more elusive than capturing a mythical creature.

Directed by Zach Lamplugh, the documentary style film focuses on Brian and their interaction as they work together to finish their assignment. Brian is fed up with his assignments and is hopeful he will get to cover more serious subject matter. his dreams are dashed when his colleague Dirtydolla Signs is given the job. This setback causes a significant change in Brian’s morale and Zach needs to keep him focused on their job. Jeff is happy to be the subject of his documentary because he has sacrificed his marriage to pursue his Bigfoot passion.

The VICE Guide to Bigfoot

The film is very funny and entertaining from start to finish. Even though it is is fast-paced and occasionally action packed, the film takes time to develop its characters and allow audiences to get to know and care about Brian, Zach, and Jeff. On their journey they meet a lot of oddball characters like Rawdog Nintendo and Truck Nuts. Despite the absurdity of the events, there are some deeper themes of acceptance and letting go of the unattainable.

Written by Zach Lamplugh and Brian Emond, a story with heart comes together in the middle of the comedy and outlandish characters. The VICE Guide to Bigfoot shows how you don’t necessarily need to achieve your dreams, but you can make the best of your current situation.
