Todd McFarlane’s original 1977 Spawn design finally arrives in ‘Spawn 77’

Co-written by Todd McFarlane and Mark Spears, the new three-issue miniseries brings Spawn’s earliest incarnation to comics for the first time with fully painted interior artwork by Spears.

Todd McFarlane is returning to the very beginning of Spawn’s history with Spawn 77, a new three-issue miniseries that introduces the original version of the character he created as a teenager in 1977. Co-written by McFarlane and Mark Spears (Mark Spears Monsters), the series will feature fully painted interior artwork by Spears in his first interior work for the Spawn Universe.

The title references the year McFarlane first conceived the character at age 16, years before Spawn debuted in 1992 and grew into one of comics’ most successful independent franchises. For the first time, readers will see that original design make its official comic book debut.

Created by McFarlane and Spears, Spawn 77 centers on an all-new character and story connected to the larger Spawn mythology. The series explores the consequences of uncovering dangerous knowledge and the threats that follow.

The first issue will arrive with an extensive collection of covers by McFarlane, Spears, and Emma Ríos (Pretty Deadly, Anzuelo). Several covers spotlight McFarlane’s original 1977 design, including a newly redrawn and recolored version of the artwork, an incentive variant featuring the original 1977 piece, and a retro logo incentive cover. Additional editions include a foil variant signed by McFarlane and a double-signed foil version featuring signatures from both creators.

Spears will provide fully painted interiors throughout the series. Known for his striking horror artwork and highly sought-after covers, Spears brings a distinctive visual style to the Spawn Universe while making his interior debut within the franchise.

“Going back to my roots of when I first developed Spawn as a high school kid, when I was just beginning to feel deeply passionate about collecting comics, and being able to use some of those ideas now 50 years later is really a personal treat for me,” said McFarlane. “To be able to do this miniseries alongside the super-talented Mark Spears will only make my enjoyment that much more special. Mark has been on the top of many fans’ wish lists to see more of his artwork, and we are all excited to show the readers what we have been looking at, from Mark, this past year. I promise you he will not disappoint anyone who is a fan of quality, sophisticated artwork.”

Spears joins the project as both co-writer and artist, helping shape a new chapter of Spawn mythology while drawing inspiration from McFarlane’s earliest concepts.

“Getting to work with Todd McFarlane is the main reason I wanted to work in comics. I read every book, watched every video, and studied every panel he created. He inspired me to become both a writer and an artist, and with Spawn 77, everything feels like it has come full circle. Creating new characters within the Spawn Universe is something I’ve dreamed about ever since I picked up Spawn #1 off the rack at my local comic book store. I can’t wait for readers to see what we have in store,” Spears added.

It’s an interesting time for this spinoff to pop up, with Matthew Rosenberg recently taking over the two mainline Spawn titles.
