Mike Mignola’s new art book ‘Circus of Bones’ showcases over 145 original works

‘Circus of Bones: The Art of Mike Mignola’ will be available at comic book shops and bookstores everywhere on Wednesday, November 25, 2026.

Scott Dunbier’s Act 4 Publishing, in partnership with Skybound and Image Comics, has announced Circus of Bones: The Art of Mike Mignola, an oversized hardcover celebrating the legendary creator’s upcoming gallery exhibition in New York City.

Serving as the official companion to Mignola’s second gallery exhibition, the 144-page volume expands significantly on the catalog from his previous show, adding 48 more pages and highlighting an extensive collection of original artwork. Details about the exhibition itself will be announced separately by the Philippe Labaune Gallery.

The centerpiece of the collection is 53 brand-new watercolor paintings created specifically for the exhibition. The book also includes more than 145 original works, featuring 60 published covers and interior pages alongside over 30 previously unseen pencil and ink drawings. Every image has been scanned directly from the original artwork.

“I’m very excited about this book, especially the color pieces,” Mignola said. “All of these are new, done entirely for this show, and represent what I think is some of the best work I’ve done.”

Few creators have left a larger mark on comics than Mignola. After beginning his career at Marvel and DC in the early 1980s, he developed a distinctive visual style defined by bold shadows, minimalism, and dramatic use of negative space. That approach reached new heights with the debut of Hellboy in 1994, launching a universe of supernatural storytelling that continues to influence creators across comics and beyond.

For Dunbier, the new paintings represent another milestone in Mignola’s artistic evolution.

“It’s been thrilling for me to see Mike Mignola’s work evolve over the past 40 years,” Dunbier said. “He went from a very good artist to a great one. But these new watercolors are something else entirely. They are extraordinary. He’s moved to another level. I can’t wait to see more.”

The release also continues the growing partnership between Act 4 Publishing and Skybound. Upcoming projects include The Amazing Spider-Man by Steve Ditko Artist’s Edition, George Pérez’s The New Teen Titans Artist’s Edition, Doctor Strange by Paul Smith Artist’s Edition, Jason Pearson’s Body Bags Artist’s Edition, DC Silver Age Covers and Stories Artist’s Edition, and Beta Ray Bill by Daniel Warren Johnson Artist’s Edition.
