Daniel Warren Johnson’s ‘Beta Ray Bill’ gets oversized Artist’s Edition in 2027

One of Marvel’s most celebrated modern miniseries is getting the Artist’s Edition treatment, offering fans a massive look at Daniel Warren Johnson’s original artwork.

Act 4 Publishing and Skybound have announced Beta Ray Bill by Daniel Warren Johnson Artist’s Edition, a deluxe oversized collection showcasing the complete 2021 miniseries from writer and artist Daniel Warren Johnson.

Arriving in comic shops on February 3, 2027, the 144-page hardcover presents every page from Johnson’s acclaimed Beta Ray Bill series at its original art size in a 12″ x 17″ format. The collection will also include an introduction by legendary creator Walter Simonson, whose work helped establish Beta Ray Bill as one of Marvel’s most beloved cosmic heroes.

The miniseries marked a defining moment for Johnson, who elevated Beta Ray Bill into a heartfelt and action-packed solo adventure that explored the character’s identity, purpose, and place in the Marvel Universe. The story remains a fan favorite and is often cited among the creator’s strongest mainstream comics work.

Johnson reflected on what it means to see the project receive an Artist’s Edition release.

“I’ll never forget the first artist edition I bought: Jack Kirby’s New Gods. It’s still in my studio, treasured, inspiring me to this day,” said Daniel Warren Johnson. “It’s an honor to have Scott Dunbier give my story the same treatment.”

Artist’s Editions are designed to replicate the experience of viewing original comic art. While the pages appear black and white at first glance, they are scanned in full color to preserve every detail of the original boards, including blue pencil marks, corrections, ink textures, and production notes.

For longtime Artist’s Edition editor Scott Dunbier, Johnson’s work was a natural fit for the format.

“Looking at Dan’s work is akin to viewing an artistic nuclear reactor, his drawings radiate from the page,” said Scott Dunbier. “The power generated is raw, tangible, and gorgeous.”

Skybound publisher Sean Mackiewicz was equally enthusiastic about the collection.

“If you need a reminder that Dan’s the undisputed best artist in comics right now, this Beta Ray Bill Artist’s Edition will knock some sense into you,” said Sean Mackiewicz, SVP, Publisher, Skybound. “Every page is a masterpiece.”

The release continues the partnership between Act 4 Publishing and Skybound, which has already announced an impressive lineup of future Artist’s Editions. Upcoming projects include The Amazing Spider-Man by Steve Ditko, The New Teen Titans by George Pérez, Doctor Strange by Paul Smith, Body Bags by Jason Pearson, and DC Silver Age Covers and Stories.
