DC’s Next Level initiative is heading into the Old West this October with Jonah Hex and the Shadow of Death, a new six-issue series written and illustrated by Michael Walsh (Exquisite Corpses).
The latest addition to DC’s growing line of creator-driven launches follows recently announced books including Batwoman, Lobo, Deathstroke: The Terminator, The Fury of Firestorm, Zatanna, Barbara Gordon: Breakout, and The Deadman. Walsh’s take on the legendary bounty hunter blends horror, psychological suspense, and frontier action, bringing a supernatural edge to one of DC’s oldest antiheroes.
The series opens with Jonah Hex believing his violent past is finally behind him. Living quietly in the small town of Ashecott, Hex soon discovers an ancient evil has arrived, one that is older than the town itself and unlike anything the frontier has ever faced.
As mysterious entities close in on a child with extraordinary abilities, Hex is forced back into the fight. Confronting monsters from beyond this world may also offer him one final chance at redemption.
The series marks another creator-focused project as DC All In continues to expand, highlighting fresh voices and new directions across both the core DC Universe and the Absolute Universe. If you’ve been following Walsh’s work, from The Silver Coin to Frankenstien, we’re in for a real treat!
Jonah Hex and the Shadow of Death #1 arrives in comic shops on October 7 with a main cover by Michael Walsh and variant covers by Brian Bolland, Julian Totino Tedesco, Javier Rodríguez (1:25), and Hayden Sherman (Next Level).
DC also confirmed that additional Next Level announcements are on the way, with future titles starring the Teen Titans, Doom Patrol, Legion of Super-Heroes, The Demon, Deadshot, and more. The initiative will feature creators including Skottie Young, Joshua Williamson, Kyle Higgins, Greg Rucka, Jeff Lemire, W. Maxwell Prince, James Harren, and many others.
