Saban Films acquires SXSW Midnighter ‘Initiation’

The social media teen slasher is an homage to the 90s.

Though it was cancelled due to COVID-19, there has still been a lot of news to come out of SXSW. Despite not making their planned premieres at the Festival, many movies have still managed to find other forms of distribution.

John Berardo’s Initiation has been acquired by Saban Films. The movie was set to premiere as a midnight showing at SXSW under the name Dembanger. The film is a throwback to the teen slashers of earlier years with a modern twist.

A masked killer targets the students of Whiton University. The killings all seem to be linked to social media.

Saban Films acquires SXSW Midnighter 'Initiation'

“We hope that the film’s topical themes and innovative portrayal of social media resonate with the cultural zeitgeist to create a thought-provoking thrill ride that will appeal to digital natives and genre fans alike,” says director John Berardo. “Initiation pays homage to the nineties horror classics I grew up on, but with a modern take for today’s socially conscious generation.”
